The economic situation is worsening, so things are different from years ago. Teams are either reducing the amount they offer, or are not making offers to as many international players, especially for the liberos.
If you have read the feature article about Sykora on this January Volleyball Mag, you will find why she didn’t play for any team this season. One of the most important reasons is that teams won’t pay a lot to recruit a libero, even a top player like Sykora (at least she was). Same thing happens to Nicole Davis. I doubt she has ever played overseas professionally.
In European leagues, they pay a lot for those top-level OHs and OPPs. Setters and MBs are on another level. The players who are big on both offensive and defensive sides will make themselves more marketable.
Per a post on VT, top players receive offers worth $200k to 300k for a season in Russia and Turkey. But be aware that only the powerhouse like Dinamo Moscow can offer these figures. Italian A1 teams usually make lower offers according to an interview with Guiggi (Italian Olympian, maybe mis-spelling) and that’s why A1 has lost so many top players this season. Japan’s V-league makes the offers at low-end of this range (150k to 250k), but I’m not very sure if there are any other incentives for some things like first place finishes, leading scorer in the league, etc. I am so surprised that even the top VB players get paid so low compared with other pro athletes.
But please note that all the figures are just for reference and will not be treated as the only criteria to follow.
As for Araki, this is what I heard from another VB forum. Bergamo and its sponsors wanted to promote their products in Japan and as an exchange, Araki played for Bergamo. It is business factor that made the transfer happen. Maybe this can explain why she’s been benched for almost the whole season. If this offends any Araki fans, I will apologize.
Wow, I did not know that the European league is going to make such a rule change.
yes, that's true.
But the rule will go into effect in the 2010-2011 season, not next season.
And I don't think it is only limited to European leagues, it's the FIVB propose the new rule.
Under this going-to-be situation, only two international players per team will be allowed on the court at the same time. This will be really tough for American young athletes.
Same thing happens to Nicole Davis. I doubt she has ever played overseas professionally.
Actually, Nicole has played professionally in Turkey. I think she became the first foreigner to play for Turkey before Kim Glass (according to NBC Olympics)
Per USAV player profile, Nicole was the first international libero to ever play Turkish League.
Kim, Tay and Nicole all played in Turkey during 2007-08 season.
wow, toray makes very few mistakes...must have been frustrating on HS. Toray waited for HS to make their mistakes...those are the hardest teams to beat, since it means you can't make mistakes...
wow, somehow my regular account for megaupload has turned into a premium account, without me actually paying premium...so i can parallel download without any wait time...awesome!!
